Hilversummer Sanil B., the main suspect of the serious violence in Mallorca, must disappear behind bars for ten years. The Public Prosecution Service demands this in the appeal. Justice still suspects him alone of the manslaughter of Carlo Heuvelman, there is insufficient evidence that a second suspect was involved.
The sentence demanded against Sanil B. is higher than his previous sentence of seven years in prison, but again equal to the previous sentence demanded by the judiciary. Sanil B. allegedly kicked and punched Carlo Heuvelman so hard during the night of July 13 to 14, 2021, that he became unconscious and died in the hospital four days later.
The Advocate General considers the manslaughter of Carlo by B. to be proven on the basis of a large number of witness statements and a DNA trace found.
It is striking that justice only holds Sanil B. responsible for Carlo’s death. Until now, it was always assumed that there was at least a second suspect, but that there was insufficient evidence to link a name to it.
Other suspects no longer in jail
Hilversummers Hein B. and Mees T. were also always seen as possibly involved in Carlo’s manslaughter, but according to the justice department they must now be acquitted due to a lack of evidence. This also leads to lower sentencing requirements for the pair.
Mees T. is still suspected by the judiciary of attempted serious assault, attempted manslaughter and public violence and was therefore sentenced to two years in prison. Hein B. is still suspected of attempted manslaughter because of the violence against a friend of Carlo. The young Hilversummer therefore heard demands for a prison sentence of one and a half years.
Suspects Kaan B. and Daan van S. also heard demands for a year and a half in prison. The pair are suspected of attempted manslaughter in an earlier fight the same evening. The two other suspects, Stan F. and Lukas O, were sentenced to community service and a suspended prison sentence: community service of 180 and 240 hours respectively and conditional prison sentences of three and six months.
If the court takes over the sentencing requirements next spring, this will mean that – apart from the main suspect Sanil B. – no one will have to go to jail anymore. The sentences are partly conditional: the suspects have already served the unconditional part in pre-trial detention.
