A fire broke out this evening in the heathland near the Baggelhuizerplas in Assen. The fire is causing a lot of smoke development, the Drenthe Safety Region said.
This concerns a heathland fire that at its peak occupied 50 by 50 meters of land, close to the Defense military training area. Several fire brigade units worked together to reduce the burning area. The fire is now under control.
Because the smoke is not yet out of the air, an NL alert warns residents around the Baggelhuizen nature reserve to keep windows and doors closed for the time being.
It is not known how the fire started.
