Alexander Zverev hit the surprising leaving against an underdog. After the match, he puts his emotional world open – with moving words.
Open words from Germany’s best tennis player: After his surprising first round in Wimbledon, Alexander Zverev spoke about his current constitution-and made mental problems public. “At the moment I feel pretty much alone in life. And that is not a very nice feeling,” said a visibly accepted Zverev on Tuesday evening at the press conference after the match in the All England Club. Even more: At the moment it is difficult for him to “find joy outside the tennis court”. And further: He can also imagine therapy.
The Hamburger was unexpectedly eliminated in five sets against the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in five sets. 6: 7 (3: 7), 7: 6 (10: 8), 3: 6, 7: 6 (7: 5), 4: 6 it was after 4:44 hours at the end of the Hamburg’s perspective on Tuesday afternoon in London (read more here). It was Zverev’s first first round in London since 2019. Against the current world ranking 70. Rinderknech was Zverev (third place) the clear favorite, but showed a strikingly energy -free performance over long distances just on Tuesday – the game was canceled on Monday evening due to the noise protection regulations at 11 p.m.
Zverev opened his emotional world at the press conference: “I went through a lot of difficulties. I went through many difficulties in the media. I generally went through many difficulties in life. I have never felt so empty,” said the 28-year-old. And further: He lacks “just the joy of everything I do. It’s not necessarily about tennis.”
Now he wanted to find answers to the Masters in Canada (start at the end of July). He had to understand “which people bring me joy, which motivates me”. That was “number one task” at the age of 28. Zverev revealed from his private life: At the moment, his daughter Mayla is the person who makes him happiest. “But she is four. Usually it has to be the other way around, I have to give your energy, I have to make you happy and not the other way around. It can’t be.” He does not yet know how he will spend the coming days, said Zverev.
After the bitter final defeat at the Australian Open against Jannik Sinner at the end of January and the deserved end in the quarter-finals of the French Open against Novak Djoković a few weeks ago, Zverev 2025 only has the US Open (start 24 August) to fulfill the dream of the Grand Slam title. In New York, Zverev was already in the final in 2020, after a 2-0 set lead in five sets against the Austrian Dominic Thiem. The hope of success this year is waning more and more after an extremely mixed season.
