Harsh criticism of Karl Geiger: “Not optimally prepared”

The start of the ski jumping season was mixed at best for Karl Geiger. After poor results in three of the first four competitions, an ex-professional criticized the 29-year-old German. But he does not want to write off the nominal number one of the DSV.

Even before the first competition in Wisla at the beginning of November, Karl Geiger suspected that the new ski jumping season might not start as successfully as the old one ended. “The cards are being reshuffled,” the man from Oberstdorf wrote in his sport.de column, referring, among other things, to the rule changes to the equipment, with which some jumpers would get along better at the start of the season and others less well.

Ultimately, Geiger was one of those who had some problems. In Wisla he missed the second round in the first competition, in the second competition it was only enough for 17th place. At the end of November in Ruka his form curve initially showed an upward trend. The reward: A good sixth place, which the 29-year-old was “very happy”. Just one day later, he flew past the final again as 33rd in the first round.

Former Polish ski jumper Jakub Kot thinks he knows why things are not going well for Geiger. The first competitions were really not a lottery, he judged in an interview with “sportowefacty“. Geiger and also Japan’s exceptional jumper Ryoyu Kobayashi, who also jumped behind, are “simply not optimally prepared at the moment”, said Kot: “They are not in shape.”

Kot: Geiger will still be at his best

Individual jumps by Geiger were already at a “high level”, but overall it wasn’t quite right, analyzed the Pole, who at the same time noted that he didn’t want to write off the German and the Japanese so quickly.

“The break now can have helped a lot,” Kot can imagine that Geiger will be back in Titisee-Neustadt at the weekend. “And so are we [Bundestrainer Stefan] Knowing Horngacher, we can be almost certain that Geiger will show his best form this season”, the ex-pro also trusts the work of the German coaching team.

Geiger himself is confident that he will soon be able to overturn the proverbial buck. “The points that need to be worked on are known and step by step things are going in the right direction,” he wrote in his sport.de column before the German home game.
