Valencia outclassed, 101 goals scored this season: things are going well at FC Barcelona under Hansi Flick – even if the former national coach doesn’t attach much importance to every notable number.
FC Barcelona’s impressive mark of 101 goals this season left Hansi Flick outwardly cold – despite the historic magnitude. Only one coach in the Catalans’ club history reached this number faster. “That doesn’t mean anything,” emphasized Flick after his team’s dominant 7-1 win against FC Valencia. “We want to perform and win trophies. That’s what counts.”
Flick’s Barça broke the 100-goal mark in just 32 games this season. In the club’s history, only Helenio Herrera in the 1950s had achieved this a game faster. Despite the milestone, Flick focused on his team’s performance: “For me it was a perfect game, and we saw a lot of players who haven’t played much yet.” He particularly praised his team’s mentality: “I love the hunger my team has, and now they’re showing it.”
Just five days after their spectacular comeback in the Champions League with a 5-4 win against Benfica Lisbon, Barça once again offered their fans offensive fireworks. But the team remains in third place in the league, seven points behind leaders Real Madrid. Atlético Madrid is in second place with three points more after 21 games.
Barcelona got off to a lightning start against Valencia: Frenkie de Jong scored in the third minute, Ferran Torres (8th) and Raphinha (14th) quickly increased. Before the break, Fermín López made everything clear with a brace (24th, 45th + 4).
The guests from Valencia reduced the score to 1:5 after the break through Hugo Duro (59′). Robert Lewandowski, who initially sat on the bench, only needed six minutes after being substituted to also score (66th). The final point was an own goal from Cesar Tárrega (75th), which finally rounded off Barcelona’s high-scoring performance.
