Pfeiffer pulled away from the field after around 30 kilometers and crossed the finish line after 2:10:59 hours. “From kilometer 38 I knew that it would be enough,” said Pfeiffer in the NDR interview: “It was damn exhausting. But I had a great pacemaker for the first 30 km,” said the winner happily. The Kenyan Josphat Kiprop came second Kiptis (2:13:47) almost three minutes behind.

Just missed a personal best

With his success, Pfeiffer implemented his offensive announcement: “I finally want to win my first national title in the elite area,” he said before the start. He did this in an impressive way. Two years ago he had won in Hanover with a personal best time (2:10:18 hours). Back then, the race wasn’t also the national championship.

Mayer distances favorite Schöneborn

Mayer (Regensburg) won the women’s title at her first marathon start. She finished in 2:26:50 hours. “I hadn’t calculated anything and really just wanted to finish,” said Mayer.

Favorite Rabea Schöneborn had physical problems in the closing stages and couldn’t keep up the pace. She finished second, 45 seconds back. “It was tough for me, but I’m happy to have arrived. I’m happy about second place,” said Schöneborn.
