Hannover 96: Striker Weydandt ends his career in the summer

Pro debut at age 22

Center forward Hendrik Weydandt from the second division club Hannover 96 ends his professional career in the summer. This was announced by the players and the club on Wednesday in a video statement via the club’s channels. In 2018, the 27-year-old switched from the then upper division club Germania Egestorf-Langreder to the second representation of Lower Saxony and shortly afterwards made the relatively late leap to the professionals at the age of 22. Since then, Weydandt has played 144 competitive games for the Reds, scoring 27 goals and assisting 13 more.

Weydandt had already scored a goal in the 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen during his 15-minute professional debut in August 2018 and, not least because of his unconventional past, earned himself the status of the 96-crowd favorite in the weeks that followed. The attacker’s contract at Maschsee expires in the summer – this season Weydandt has had three goals in 19 games, two of which he played over 90 minutes. “I would like to inform you that after much deliberation I have decided, when my contract here at 96 expires on June 30th, at the same time as my perhaps not very long, but nevertheless very intensive and special professional career as a footballer here at Hannover 96 end. I’ve been carrying this decision with me for a few weeks,” said the native of Gehrden in the video statement to the fans of the traditional Lower Saxony club.

Weydandt’s highest market value of 1.5 million euros dates from the summer of 2019, since then the market value for the striker has been steadily downhill. “Many of you will have noticed that I was involved in taxation and auditing before my football career, but also during it, and that I completed my bachelor’s and master’s degree here in Hanover in this area. Now I would like to take the opportunity to start a new phase of life in my father’s tax office and to devote myself to this new and also very interesting task,” the legal footer continued.

96 professional Weydandt on the decision: “Rounded end”

In the message, Weydandt thanked former teammates and the current team. He wanted to “express a very, very big thank you to everyone involved: to the fans of Hannover 96, to my former and current teammates, to all the people who worked with me here in the club around the team, but also in the team and who have accompanied me on my way over the past few years. I will look back on a wonderful, very formative, eventful time and I am just really happy that I was able to spend this time here. I met very special people. It’s hard to thank each individual – but I’d like to mention a few.”

“Former teammates like Eddy Prib, Marvin Bakalorz and Niclas Füllkrug – players who were very influential in my first year. But also in the course of time many new faces, be it now in or around the team. Of course, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Stefan Leitl and Marcus Mann, with whom I had great discussions – also about this topic, of course – and who enabled me to find a well-rounded end at Hannover 96,” said the centre-forward. Leaving out loan players Maximilian Beier and Bright Arrey-Mbi, Weydandt is Hannover’s second definite departure at the end of the season after Gaël Ondoua.
