The decision at the weekend came as a surprise: coach Stefan Leitl had to go to seventh place at Hannover 96 and second only two points behind – André Breitenreiter returned to Maschsee to replace him. The 51-year-old has initially signed with Lower Saxony until 2025. According to “Sport Bild”, the working paper will automatically be extended by one year if the return to the Bundesliga is successful.
Hannover was last there in the 2018/19 season, until the end of January with coach Breitenreiter. The football teacher, who comes from Langenhagen in the Hanover region, led the Reds to direct promotion again in 2017. He also achieved promotion to the upper house with SC Paderborn in 2014. A year later, the East Westphalians were relegated again, but Breitenreiter was able to take the next step in his coaching career at FC Schalke 04.
