Hannover 96 can’t calm down. After missing the Bundesliga relegation, the shareholders, according to information from “Bild” newspaper a transfer and hiring freeze was imposed. The background is the unclear future of coach Christian Titz and interim sports director Ralf Becker, who has taken over a large part of the tasks since Jörg Schmadtke’s quick exit in March.
Numerous applications were received for the position of sports director. The shareholders and supervisory board members Martin Kind and Gregor Baum are said to have started discussions. Becker, who actually works as a sports director, should not be a candidate for a promotion. The 55-year-old had ruled out a separation from Titz after the disappointment on the last day of the match. Kind, however, counted the coach: “I would keep it open for now. Despite everything, he did a good job, but you can see where certain problems and limitations lie.”
Neither players nor employees should be hired until a decision has been made on both positions. Hanover loses valuable time. The 96ers are without a goalkeeper, but candidate Florian Kastenmeier (28, Düsseldorf) is being courted by many clubs. Titz’ preferred candidate Jean Hugonet (26, Magdeburg), with whom an agreement is said to have already been reached, also has to be patient. Assistant coach Levent Sürme, whose contract is to be extended, and Paul Wagner, whom Becker already knows from Dresden and who is supposed to join as a squad planner, also have to wait. But the 27-year-old had to leave this week after a visit without achieving anything.

A development that is also being closely monitored at the parent club. “I haven’t heard anything about it, I haven’t received a single application,” said the chairman of the supervisory board, Ralf Nestler, on the sidelines of the general meeting “Image” demand about the search for a new sports director. “We are actually waiting for it and are of the opinion that it is necessary to have a second managing director for the sport. That is important! But I would very much welcome it if something happens.”

The fact that Schmadtke’s return only lasted three months was “very sad and disappointing,” added Nestler. “But there are reasons for that. He expressed his ideas, then it didn’t fit. He’s very consistent.” For example, there is said to have been disagreement about coach Titz. In general, the cooperation between the parent club and the outsourced professional football department is “quite good.” With regard to the sport, Nestler added: “Fourth place is like a reflection of the current situation. It’s not a catastrophe, but not everything is good either. A lot of things went right, but not everything has been clarified yet.”
Ezeh from Hannover 96 to Dynamo Dresden
While we have to wait and see when it comes to new arrivals, Brooklyn Ezeh (24), whose contract is expiring, has found a new club. According to consistent media reports, the left-wing rail player is drawn to second division rival Dynamo Dresden. An agreement is said to have already been reached, only the medical check and the signature are still pending.

Ezeh came to Hanover from Wehen Wiesbaden in the summer of 2023 for a fee of 800,000 euros, but had to undergo treatment for psychological problems in November of the same year. After that, he was never able to really gain a foothold at 96. Injuries also set him back. He was finally sorted out by Titz at the beginning of last season. In 2025/26 there are only five regional league appearances for the 96 reserves. There were a total of 25 appearances for the professionals.
