The ball is rolling again in the 2nd league after the winter break. Things went differently for the promotion hopefuls Hannover and Düsseldorf.
Dream start for André Breitenreiter. In his first game after returning to Hannover 96, the coach celebrated a 1-0 win against second division bottom team Jahn Regensburg. Breitenreiter was able to thank his striker Jessic Ngankam, who scored the golden goal after 35 minutes.
The mood at Fortuna Düsseldorf is completely different. After a 2-0 lead against Darmstadt 98, it looked like a win for a long time. Myron van Brederode (41st) and Giovanni Haag (61st) scored. However, Darmstadt turned things up again and equalized within three minutes with a brace from Killian Corredor (69’/72′). Final score: 2:2.
André Breitenreiter made a successful comeback to the coaching bench of Hannover 96 with an arduous win at bottom club SSV Jahn Regensburg. Attacker Jessic Ngankam made it 1-0 (1-0) for Lower Saxony at the start of the second half of the season in the 2nd Bundesliga on Friday evening with his fourth goal of the season in the 35th minute.
In the end, Lower Saxony was lucky. Jahn joker Noah Ganaus hit the post with a volley in the 89th minute. Hannover moved up to second place with 30 points. Regensburg remain last with 11 points.
Breitenreiter is supposed to achieve in Hanover what his predecessor Stefan Leitl was no longer capable of: promotion to the Bundesliga. The 51-year-old had already achieved this once in 2017 in his first term as 96 coach.
A brace from Killian Corredor saved SV Darmstadt 98 from another defeat at Fortuna Düsseldorf and saved his team at least a point against the Rhinelanders. The Hessians, who have now only lost once in eleven league games, missed their first jump into the top half of the second league table with a 2-2 (0-1) draw. The Düsseldorf team, who led the table seven times in the first half of the season, would have reached the top group again with a win.
The goal from Myron van Brederode (41st minute) and Giovanni Haag (61st) wasn’t enough for Düsseldorf, who have only won one of the last nine games, in front of 52,000 spectators as part of the “Fortuna for All” series with free entry to victory. Corredor first scored from a penalty in the 69th minute to make it 1-2 and equalized just three minutes later.
