A spectacle on the VAM mountain near Wijster in recent months: a group of dozens of young ravens has discovered the mountain as an ideal hangout.
In Drenthe, the raven is increasingly common as a breeding bird, but that has been different. At the beginning of the twentieth century the large bird disappeared from our country. Since 2003 they have been breeding in our province by trial and error.
“If I came to look here a few years ago, I sometimes counted what I saw. Groups of around thirty ravens,” says nature expert Hans Dekker. “Lately, people have been active here who look at birds of prey, at the red and the black kite who may start breeding here. That is why they are going to go more frequently here and they noticed that those ravens are sitting here. A good birdwatcher took a picture of ravens above the Vam Berg with eight -rays in one photo. That is a gigantic group at this time.”
Dekker explains that since their return to the Netherlands, Raven is looking for quiet areas to breed. The young ravens then need their own place. “It is not that they immediately form a pair and get to work immediately with eggs. No, those animals need a hangout,” says Dekker.
“The young ravens are looking for a place where they can quietly camp, can sleep and where there is enough food. There is enough food on the VAM mountain. Waste is still being deposited and that attracts all kinds of animals. The ravens reap the benefits, because they eat everything that comes to them.”
