Handball national coach sees EM team as a perspective squad

Bratislava (AP) – handball national coach Alfred Gislason sees in his team for the European championship starting today the perspective squad for the upcoming tournaments.

He is convinced that the upheaval will pay off, said the Icelander in an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. “It may be a shame for the current European Championship because we are not playing with the best players and are not eligible for a medal. But in the long term it will help a lot that the boys now get a lot of playing time,” said the 62- Year olds.

Germany will host the next EM in 2024 and three years later for the World Cup. “Any player who comes in now has a very good chance of making it in 2024,” said Gislason. He is betting on players like captain Johannes Golla (Flensburg-Handewitt) or Sebastian Heymann (Göppingen), but also the Berlin Fabian Wiede, who is missing for personal reasons.

Golla was as good as set, he was just 24 years old and had made an incredible development, said the national coach. Heymann has everything to become an absolute world class player. “And even if Fabian Wiede is not there now: He is and will remain an extremely important player for the future,” emphasized Gislason.

In contrast, the once successful club coach, who has won the Champions League three times with SC Magdeburg and THW Kiel, sees Juri Knorr as falling behind for the time being. The middle man of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen missed the tournament because he does not want to be vaccinated against Covid-19. “It’s a shame for him and me that this interruption is coming now. And for Juri it carries the risk that others will shine in the meantime,” said Gislason. If someone else plays into focus on his position, it will be his luck. “And it’s my job to put together the best.”
