Former world-class goalkeeper Henning Fritz is critical of the contract extension with handball national coach Alfred Gislason shortly before the European Championship.

The Icelander is “a renowned and successful trainer, a proven expert”, said the 2007 world champion in an interview with the “Mannheimer Morgen” (Tuesday). “But I ask myself: If you decide on a change in the team and many young players, is Alfred Gislason also a future-oriented solution?”

The German Handball Federation (DHB) extended the contract with the 62-year-old Gislason in December to 2024. “Perhaps there would have been a younger coach with a certain reputation who embodied this new beginning even more,” said Fritz. Specifically, Fritz ex-national player could “imagine Florian Kehrmann as a national coach”, as he said. The 44-year-old coach of cup winner TBV Lemgo is “a very good coach”.
