Handball European League: Lemgo loses qualifying first leg in Göppingen

TBV Lemgo Lippe had to admit defeat against Frisch Auf Göppingen in the first leg of the second qualifying round for the European League.

After a disappointing start in the league with two points from five games, Lemgo Lippe was also unsuccessful on the international stage in the national duel against Frisch Auf Göppingen. Lemgo lost the first leg of the second qualifying round of the European League against their league rivals by 28:24 (12:12).

Lemgo comes back after a weak start

Göppingen started furiously in front of their home crowd and took a 9:5 lead after 15 minutes. After goals from Samuel Zehnder, Lukas Hutecek and Tim Suton and two strong saves from goalkeeper Finn Zecher, Florian Kehrmann’s team responded quickly and reduced the lead to 8:9 after 20 minutes.

Towards the end of the first half, Lemgo was particularly strong defensively and only conceded three goals in a 7-3 run in 15 minutes. After a bumpy start, the guests went into the break with a 12:12.

Göppingen pulls away in the final phase

The game remained hard-fought at the start of the second half. Neither team was able to pull away decisively. The early highlight of the second half was provided by Göppingen’s goalkeeper Daniel Rebmann, who reacted brilliantly in the one-on-one duel against Zehnder.

After Göpinngen was able to pull away slightly at 19:17, TBV equalized again after goals from Zehnder and Gerardus Versteijnen. And also at the beginning of the final phase, the two Bundesliga teams fought a duel on an equal footing.

Five minutes before the end, Göppingen pulled away 25:22 after a 3:0 run. Lemgo also had to let go thanks to the strong Marin Sego in the Göppingen goal and in the end lost a clear four goal difference.

Lemgo on Thursday in Stuttgart – second leg in a week

A deficit that the TBV has to make up in the second leg on Tuesday (October 4th) in their home hall in order to still get into the group phase of the European League.

Before that, however, Lemgo Lippe will meet TVB 1898 Stuttgart in the next away game on Thursday in the Bundesliga.
