Because friend Justus Fischer missed the final of the European Handball Championship at short notice, Germany’s goalkeeper David Späth quickly grabbed his jersey – and the silver medal.
A nice gesture at the award ceremony: David Späth came after the 27:34 defeat against Denmark in the jersey of his friend Justus Fischer, wearing his name and number on the front of his chest.
“Fischi, get well soon! You played an outstanding tournament, we miss you and needed you today,” Späth sent greetings to the team hotel in Silkeborg in the ARD interview.

The pivot from Hannover-Burgdorf, one of the heroes in the semi-finals with four blocked throws, missed the final at short notice due to an infection. “Get fit again quickly and we’ll attack again next year,” said Späth.
The goalkeeper, who became U21 world champion with Fischer in 2023 and is considered a close friend, also took home the silver medal. The duo is notorious in the German team for their jokes, and despite the defeat against Denmark, Späth was able to laugh again. “Somewhere you remain children, especially the two of us,” said Späth. “But on the record we played very maturely.”
