Lemgo was the last of the four semi-finalists to win the cup in 2020. Magdeburg last won the DHB Cup in 2016. In the league, SCM recently won both games against Lemgo. Both times, the 2022 champions won by at least four goals.

TBV Lemgo-Lippe prevailed in the second round of the DHB Cup against second division VfB Lübeck-Schwartau with 32:23. HC Elbflorenz 2006 then waited in the round of 16. There was also a clear 32:27 victory against the North Germans. Most recently, at the beginning of February, Lemgo won against Bundesliga club VfL Gummersbach by 33:30 and qualified for the Final Four in Cologne. Lemgo is in the Final Four for the third time in a row.

After a win in the second round against Eulen Ludwigshafen, there was a clear 43:31 win over Bergischer HC in the round of 16. Most recently in the quarter-finals, the team of head coach Bennet Wiegert threw the defending champion THW Kiel out of the cup in extra time and thus took revenge for the defeat in the final last year. This makes Magdeburg one of the top favorites to win the cup.
