As of: 12/01/2022 11:18 p.m

SC Magdeburg lost a Champions League win against FC Porto on Thursday (12/01/22) in the Dragao Arena. After the German Handball Champion was leading 16:12 after the first half, the Wiegert team collapsed at the beginning of the second half.

After a comeback by the SCM and a questionable decision by the referee, it ended in a 31:31 draw. For Porto it is the first point after eight games in the premier class.

SC Magdeburg dominant

SC Magdeburg asserted itself from the start and took the lead early on (4:2/8.). Even if the Magdeburg team didn’t manage to break away, the Wiegert team kept the lead. Goalkeeper Nicola Portner proved his class several times in the first half. His teammates took advantage of this, Kristjansson extended the lead to 10:6 in the 18th minute.

The hosts from Porto remained inconspicuous, sometimes showing individual class in individual actions. This was the case with Pedro Valdés’ fine Kempa trick in the 19th minute. Omar Magnusson converted five out of five possible penalty kicks in the first half, and the German champions went into the break with a 100% hit rate and a four-goal lead.

Wiegert team hands over victory

After the change of sides, Magdeburg suddenly seemed agitated in attack, made too many mistakes – and Porto turned the game around (17:18/37.). Magdeburg was beside themselves and also became less secure in defense. Not even Magnusson scored from the point. Porto pulled away to three goals (20:17/40.). Magdeburg came back late, but the referees took back Tim Hornke’s supposed winning goal in a questionable decision after the final whistle.

Magnusson was the best thrower with seven goals. The Wiegert team welcomes TBV Lemgo Lippe in the Bundesliga on Sunday (December 4th, 2022).
