SC Magdeburg opened the title hunt in the handball Bundesliga with a safe victory.
Thanks to a 15-goal gala of his Icelander Omar Ingi Magnusson, Vizemeister SC Magdeburg started the season of the handball Bundesliga with a confident victory. At TBV Lemgo Lippe, the Champions League winner prevailed with 33:29 (14: 9) and left a very strong impression.
Magdeburg comes out of the cabin with fire
The SCM did not burn anything from the first minute and took control in the Lemgoer Arena. The runner -up put the hosts under pressure with an uncompromising offensive and was also safe at the back. Above all, Magnusson could not be stopped – the Icelander scored nine of the 14 Magdeburg goals before the break. Lemgo took almost ten minutes before Joel Wiltecke completed the hosts’ first successful attack to 1: 6. After that, the TBV found better into the game and was now able to keep up with the Magdeburgers offensive and defensively. The goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez and Urh Kastelic were also able to press their stamps on the game in this phase and distinguish themselves with strong parades. At halftime, the game had settled at +5 for the SCM.

After the change of sides, it initially remained a game at eye level. By 21:16 (44th), both teams went into steps before the TBV heralded its best phase. Thanks to two faster goals, the hosts shortened to 18:21 (46th), while the runner -up appeared too unconcentrated in this phase and remained offensive for over six minutes without scoring.
Reason enough for Coach Bennet Wiegert to intervene with a timeout – with success. Just seven minutes later, his team – thanks to a strong Hernandez between the posts, which even entered the goal scorer list – was back to 28:21 (53rd) and the encounter was almost decided.
The fact that the SCM debutant Matej Mandic parried a seven-meter in the goal with his first action (44th) fit into the Magdeburg overall picture. In the final phase, the guests didn’t burn anything and prevailed convincingly.
