SC Magdeburg also cleared the Minden hurdle and secured a clear away win. After an error-filled start for the newly promoted side, a red card changed the dynamics of the game.

SC Magdeburg continued its perfect run and clinched its 17th win in a row. After initial difficulties, the Elbestadt team clearly prevailed against promoted GWD Minden with 36:21 (18:14).

The league leaders struggled at the start of the game and made an unusually large number of mistakes in their offensive game. After five minutes the score was still 1-1 because the SCM had only scored one goal from four attacks. Minden gained confidence thanks to the decent start and even took the lead 4:5 after eleven minutes thanks to Franz Kranzmann.

Red card changes the game

The deficit temporarily woke up Magdeburg. With a 4-0 run, the Green-Reds made it 8-5, but Minden didn’t give up and equalized again after 20 minutes thanks to the strong performance of Tom Bergner. Immediately after his goal to make it 9:9, Bergner hit Phillip Weber, who was carrying the ball, with his arm in the face much too late. After a short video study, the referees decided on a red card.

The loss of the pivot caused a small break in the hosts’ game, which Magdeburg knew how to take advantage of and made it 15:11 with a 6:2 run. A double strike before half-time made it 18:14 and a four-goal lead at half-time.

Minden almost 15 minutes without a goal

Magnus Saugstrup opened the second round after just 13 seconds, ushering in a much faster-paced second half. Magdeburg then forced play on the wings by taking possession of Felix Claar. The backcourt player repeatedly found Daniel Pettersson and Lukas Mertens, who often had a lot of space on the wings, with his passes and secured the 27:20 after 45 minutes.

In the final quarter of an hour, Minden finally bit its teeth into the SCM defense. The hosts remained without a goal of their own for almost 15 minutes and allowed Magdeburg to pull away even more clearly. Mertens found a final answer to Kranzmann’s goal according to a familiar pattern and scored to make the final score 36:21.
