Despite the World Cup break, SC Magdeburg has to accept the next setback: backcourt player Manuel Zehnder tore his cruciate ligament with the national team and is missing for months.

The Swiss was seriously injured during his team’s friendly match against Italy. In addition to the cruciate ligament, the inner ligament and the meniscus in the left knee also tore. According to the club, this was the result of MRI examinations on Saturday afternoon (January 4th). SC Magdeburg has been struggling with injury concerns for the entire season and has to make some headway in the backcourt Omar Ingi Magnusson waive. Top player Felix Claar (Achilles tendon) was also missing for months.

Schmedt: “Next big blow”

Marc-Henrik Schmedt, Sports Director of the German champions, reacted in shock to the bad news: “This news is the next big blow for us. For Manuel, this serious injury is of course tragic and dramatic. After the first mandatory examinations, we unfortunately have to deal with such a thing Due to the long downtime, a return to play in the calendar year 2025 is questionable. We wish Manuel the best possible recovery.”

Zehnder only moved to Ottostadt in the summer from league rivals Eisenach, where he became the top scorer in the top division. After the World Cup (January 14th – February 2nd), in which Zehnder and Switzerland would have been the DHB team’s second opponent, SC Magdeburg will play in the top game against Kiel on February 8th.
