VfL Gummersbach has recorded its eighth win in a row in the handball Bundesliga. The Gummersbachers are in fourth place in the table, at least for the time being.
VfL Gummersbach prevailed against TSV Hannover-Burgdorf on Saturday evening with 33:27 (17:11). As a result, the Oberbergische climbed to fourth place in the Bundesliga table. The Hanoverians slipped to tenth place in the table.
The Gummersbachers were the better team right from the start at home. In all parts of the team, VfL coach Gudjón Valur Sigurdsson’s players showed a concentrated and dominant performance. The hosts quickly moved ahead to 3-0. Shortly afterwards, VfL backcourt player Miro Schluroff scored three goals in a row, Gummersbach now led 6-1 (11th).
TSV didn’t get off to a good start: Hanover’s national player Justus Fischer had two missed throws at the start. Even after that, the guests’ offensive initially remained pale and harmless: after ten minutes of play, Hannover-Burgdorf had only scored one goal, and after 17 minutes there were two goals.
Hannover stabilized in the middle of the first half, but the “Recken” were still trailing by at least six goals. In the last Gummersbach attack of the first half, Julian Köster scored to make it 17:10, and a few seconds before the end of the first half, Hannover’s Justus Fischer scored his first goal of the game.
Hannover reduces the deficit
Fischer also scored the first goal in the second half (31st). The Hanoverians, who now acted more aggressively and effectively, gradually caught up: after 35 minutes, Gummersbach only led by 19:16.
But the Bergische kept their nerve and picked up the pace again: with a 3-0 run in less than three minutes – Ellidi Snaer Vidarsson and Schluroff scored twice – VfL restored their lead to six goals.
Gummersbach’s goalkeeper with many saves
Hannover fought and couldn’t be completely shaken off, but the hosts remained confident. The goalkeepers were also a factor in VfL’s success: Bertram Obling made a total of eight saves, Dominik Kuzmanović four – the TSV goalkeepers only made four saves together.
And in attack, Schluroff scored some important goals for the home team: In the 51st minute he made it 27:22 for VfL – with his eighth goal from his eighth throw.
The Gummersbach lead remained safe until the end – the Sigurdsson team recorded a deserved home win. The game’s top scorer was Schluroff with nine goals.
