Hamann’s plea for Hummels: “By all means take it with you”

Former international Dietmar Hamann has BVB defender Mats Hummels on his list for the World Cup in Qatar.

“He was definitely one of the best three or four German central defenders in the past few months. I would definitely take Mats Hummels with me,” wrote the Sky expert in his column about the Borussia Dortmund veteran.

In important games, “sometimes a (Niklas, d. Red.) Süle or a (Nico, d. Red.) Schlotterbeck is missing in the starting XI, but Hummels always plays,” said Hamann: “That shows his form and what kind of a respected. I can’t think of anything that speaks against him.”

The 49-year-old praised the fact that Hummels regularly expresses criticism. “If he puts his finger in the wound after not so good games, then that’s the way it is,” wrote Hamann: “You can’t keep making the same mistakes and leave them uncommented.”

Mario Götze from Eintracht Frankfurt is also a serious candidate for Hamann for Qatar. “If we talk about Niclas Füllkrug with a view to the World Cup, then we also have to talk about Götze,” said Hamann. The 2014 World Cup hero has “skills that nobody else in Germany has”.

National coach Hansi Flick is allowed to take 26 players to the tournament, “and if Mario continues like this, I don’t think it’s out of the question that he’ll be there.”
