Heavy showers accompanied by hail, thunder and strong gusts of wind caused local nuisance on Saturday evening, especially in the south of the Netherlands. For example, the football match in Nijmegen between NEC and Telstar was temporarily stopped.
Images from L1Nieuws show how a lot of rainwater flows down a street in Epen in the South Limburg Heuvelland. In America, in the north of Limburg, a tree fell over a road, as can be seen in photos from Limburg media. Some places also suffered from hailstorms. According to the KNMI, the hailstones could have a diameter of 2 centimeters.
In Budel, Brabant, firefighters who were extinguishing the wildfire between Weert and Budel had to withdraw due to the approaching thunderstorm, it reports Eindhovens Dagblad. However, additional fire engines have been sent to continue extinguishing the fire.
Because of the thunderstorms, the KNMI had issued code yellow in advance for a large part of the Netherlands. From 11 p.m., this warning no longer applies to Limburg, but it does apply to the rest of the country, with the exception of the three northern provinces. According to the KNMI, the showers will decrease in activity during the night.
Very hot
It was quite warm on Saturday, with temperatures ranging from 18 to no less than 26 degrees. The day started with sun in the northeast and clouds in the southwest.
Code yellow was already in effect in Zeeland from 3 p.m. and other provinces were slowly added. During the showers it could feel clammy.
Welcome to nature
The fact that it will rain heavily for two days is very welcome for nature. The ground is extremely dry at the moment. There is fear of nature reserves drying out and poor harvests. Moreover, the fire brigade had its hands full dealing with large wildfires in recent days.
Colder after the weekend
It will be cooler after the weekend. On Tuesday, on Liberation Day, the average temperature will be 16 degrees and on Wednesday and Thursday it will only be 12 to 15 degrees. From Friday it will be considerably warmer again.
