Guardiola sets a record with 2nd treble – only three clubs managed it twice

Has only happened 15 times since 1967

Rodri’s winning goal against Inter Milan gave Manchester City not only their first Champions League title in club history, but also their first treble. Winning the league, the national cup and a European cup in one season has only happened 15 times in the history of European football. Celtic Glasgow achieved this feat for the first time in 1967.

Not a new feeling for coach Pep Guardiola, he made history with FC Barcelona back in 2008/09 and is the first coach to have twice managed the big treble by triumphing in the “premier class”.

To date, nine teams have celebrated this treble, including the title in the Champions League and before 1993 in the European Cup. Five teams managed the title hat-trick with the Europa League and UEFA Cup. Only two clubs were able to celebrate a treble twice besides Barça: FC Bayern and FC Porto.

The first to achieve the treble with two clubs was José Mourinho and the first treble in FC Porto’s history put the Portuguese in the spotlight in 2003. The 3-2 win against Celtic Glasgow in the UEFA Cup final in 2004 was even followed by winning the Champions League against AS Monaco – since then “The Special One” has been one of the most sought-after coaches in the world and the first to achieve the treble – in 2010 Inter Milan – clinched twice.

Big names like Real Madrid, Juventus Turin, AC Milan or Liverpool FC are still missing from the triple list, but Galatasaray Istanbul, Celtic and IFK Göteborg do. A perfect season is a rarity and Guardiola did it seven times with the Citizens. In the direction of record champions Real Madrid, he said with a smile in Istanbul: “Be careful, we are 13 UCL titles away, but we are coming. We are on our way! If you sleep just a little, we’ll catch up to you.”
