Ground frost measured for the first time this autumn

Ground frost has been measured in the Netherlands for the first time this autumn. At measuring point Eelde, the temperature on the ground dropped to -1.8 degrees in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. Also in Wijster for the light: -0.3 degrees.

According to RTV Drenthe weatherman, it has remained above freezing at a clog height (ten centimeters) with other weather observers. “And at observation height in the hut, one and a half meters, no one had frost.”

It was able to cool down because of broad clearings. Officially, the first frost after the summer will be on September 20, because of the time when the mercury at measuring point Eelde first dropped below freezing for the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. On average, on September 28, ground frost occurs for the first time after the summer. Last year it happened on September 21.

The earliest post-summer frost date is August 22, 1973. In 2014, the first frost since that summer did not come until November 5, a record because it happened so late in the year.
