Nuuk (dpa -AfX) – Greenland’s government is disagreed with how to evaluate the time of an announced visit by the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen this week. The old and new outdoor representative Vivian Motzfeldt explained in a message and to the Ritzau news agency that it was not appropriate that Frederiksen would come to Greenland before the new government was officially in office.
The future head of government Jens-Frederik Nielsen, on the other hand, wrote on Facebook that he was very much looking forward to the visit. At the same time, he had to underline that other statements about the upcoming visit did not reflect the attitude of his future government, he added to Motzfeldt’s criticism.
New government still has to be confirmed by the parliament
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeated statements that he wanted to put control over the island, which is largely autonomous but among the Danish kingdom, Greenland in the focus of the world public. It was only on Friday that Trump’s Vice President JD Vance attended a US military base in the secluded north of Greenland and had a sharp criticism of Denmark.
On the same day, Nielsen presented the new Greenland government coalition. It still has to be confirmed by the new parliament in the capital Nuuk, but this is considered a matter of form. A day later, Fredersken had announced that he was traveling to Greenland from Wednesday to Friday. Among other things, she wants to talk to Nielsen about the cooperation between Greenland and Denmark./trs/dp/jha
