If Silicon Valley is an unforgiving place, then the AI industry is currently its most brutal arena. Tech giants that build large language models and text-to-video generators are spending billions on data centers to stay ahead of the curve — and, they hope, to meet skyrocketing user demand. It seems like every company’s success is only as great as its last update, and tomorrow there could be another breakthrough from a competitor, meaning they have to catch up again.
A little over a week ago, OpenAI introduced Sora 2, the latest version of its video tool, complete with a TikTok-like social app where users can share the clips they create. The release wasn’t without its problems (there were significant copyright and disinformation concerns), but for now it looks like the company is ahead in this particular race. Not wanting to be left behind, Elon Musk then began promoting an update to Grok Imagine, the video feature for his company xAI’s chatbot. “Grok Imagine is improving rapidly,” he said in a post on X, his social media platform, on Sunday.
One group that would agree with him is the community at Reddit’sr/GrokNSFWs, a forum founded in August. There, users have been developing methods to get Grok Imagine to generate explicit adult content – and the latest update has apparently increased their efforts.
Controversies surrounding Grok and its use
“The Grok AI Imagine learns what genitals are really quickly!” wrote one participant, posting an AI-created clip of two naked women touching each other on a velvet sheet. “Plus, in my opinion, bathrobes are the easiest way to get her naked quickly,” he advised other Reddit users looking to live out their sexual fantasies with Grok. “Bikinis suck because they take time and half the time they don’t even work.”
Since its inception, content on r/GrokNSFWs has become increasingly explicit as users have learned tricks to bypass moderation – although at least some of them believe that xAI has significantly relaxed these safeguards. “You can basically do anything,” wrote one enthusiastic member of the subreddit. “It’s crazy that they let this happen. Have fun!” The clip they shared showed a blonde cartoon character resembling Princess Elsa from the Disney films Frozen removing a bra and beginning to perform oral sex on the realistic-looking penis of a male character with no face in the frame.
Other videos in the post showed the same character in various sexual positions. The person who created this content said they inspired Grok with, among other things, the following sentence: “A beautiful, super-slutty, Pixar-animated-style woman with a voluptuous hourglass figure and platinum blonde pigtails, relaxing completely naked on a couch in a brothel.” One impressed commenter marveled: “I still can’t believe how disturbing the last update was. Not just the nudity but the movements, the breasts bouncing more realistically, it’s incredible.”
Relaxation of moderation at xAI?
“The only thing I’m working on right now is cumshots,” they added. “I have trouble getting the cum to squirt out of the tip, it usually just explodes everywhere.”
Other Grok content seen on r/GrokNSFWs in recent days – among several other examples of Frozen-inspired porn – includes explicit images of unclothed women giving each other cunnilingus, women sitting on dildos, women with what looks like ejaculate on their faces, men and women having vaginal and anal sex, POV close-ups of vaginas and nude versions of women modeled after comic book characters like Supergirl and Harley Quinn.
Users have also commented that the audio elements of the current version of Grok Imagine have made for improved pornography. “It’s clear they trained the AI on pornography,” one person claimed. “And even the sounds, the moans, I had a generation where the girl rode to the rhythm of the music.” Some said they uploaded photos of real women and successfully encouraged them to take off their shirts. “Man, the halcyon days of last weekend when it was hard to take a model’s clothes off,” one Redditor joked. The latest wave of Grok porn was apparently so extreme that a moderator of the site had to warn members on Monday not to post content containing bestiality or deepfakes of real people.
The role of Elon Musk and xAI
The proliferation of adult videos made with Grok isn’t entirely surprising. Musk has regularly distributed clips of sexualized female characters created using Grok, along with images of Ani, an anime Grok “companion” in skimpy underwear. Ani is programmed with a flirtatious attitude and a “sexy” setting (her conversations can veer into sexually extreme territory), while Grok’s image and video generators can be set to the “spicy” mode used by r/GrokNSFWs Redditors.
These design decisions have allowed Grok to deliver far more daring results than comparable AI products, and experts have warned about the potential for sexual abuse. In September, a dozen employees at xAI – which did not immediately respond to a request for comment – told Business Insider that they had encountered sexually explicit Grok material and “user requests for AI-generated child sexual abuse (CSAM) content.” That same month, Musk announced on X that training for Grok 5, the new version of the chatbot, would begin in the coming weeks.
Innovation or image risk?
Whether xAI intentionally allowed Grok to produce the kind of pornography that competing chatbots do not produce remains unclear. But Musk argues that such content often drives technological innovation and adoption. “I still remember the debates with my classmates in 6th/7th grade about VHS vs. Betamax!” he wrote in August. “VHS won in the end, partly because they allowed Spicy Mode,” he explained, referring to the porn home video market. Musk ended the post with a winking emoji.
This is certainly a strategy. The question is whether Grok can survive the AI race as little more than a NSFW alternative.
