According to the National Observatory of Athens, the quake struck at a depth of 12.7 kilometers in the Gulf of Corinth at 01:02 local time, about 100 kilometers west of Athens. The quake was felt in the capital, but also in the Peloponnese.
Greece lies on several geological fault lines and is regularly hit by earthquakes. In October 2020, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in the Aegean Sea killed two people on the Greek island of Samos and more than 100 people in the Turkish coastal city of Izmir.
