Grass track racer Romano Hummel from Hoogkerk superiorly wins the fifth World Championship long track race in Morizes, France

Grass track racer Romano Hummel from Hoogkerk won the fifth final of the World Championship long track in Morizes, France, on Saturday evening.

This happened under difficult circumstances with a lot of rain, thunderstorms and failing lamps. As a result, the match ended late. Dave Meijerink, who recently became Dutch grass track champion for Hummel, was also on a roll. The driver from Schuinesloot finished fourth.

Romano Hummel seems completely old again

Hummel, who had some problems earlier in the season, seems completely back to his old self. He won four of his five heats in Morizes and then also the final. In it he had to deal with the German Martin Smolinski and the British Chris ‘Bomber’ Harris. They had to recognize their superior in the Groninger and finished second and third respectively. Mika Meijer from Winschoten and the Frisian Theo Pijper were 13th and 15th in the final standings.

Harris and Smolinski battle for the title

For Hummel, who did not get further than sixth place in the previous four World Championship long track races, the world title is no longer feasible. He is fifth in the standings with one game to go. A podium finish with a third place may still be possible for the driver.

The final battle for the world title is between rivals Harris and Smolinski. Harris saw his lead in the standings shrink to a mere point after Saturday with one race to go in Mühldorf, Germany.
