The 2023 Grammys were presented on Sunday evening. The evening before, Nirvana were officially recognized in the “Special Merit Award” category. It was announced in advance that they would receive this award. They’re not the only artists honored: This year’s Lifetime Achievement Awards also honored Bobby McFerrin, Ma Rainey, Nile Rodgers, Slick Rick, The Supremes and Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band Heart.

Former Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear accepted the award. Bassist Krist Novoselic said, among other things, “They said Kurt (Cobain) was funny, smart, and he said teenage angst paid off — which is true.” Novoselic still handles mail from fans, and he gets letters from around the world by Nirvana fans. Among them are many young people. “There’s a new generation of Nirvana fans and I’m very grateful for that.”

During her lifetime, Nirvana was nominated for a Grammy six times. They won one after Kurt Cobain’s death for Best Alternative Music Performance for their performance on MTV Unplugged in New York.

Nirvana released three studio albums in their career, BLEACH, NEVERMIND and IN UTERO. Singer Kurt Cobain took his own life on April 5, 1994, and the band then broke up. Nirvana are considered the most important and influential band in the grunge genre, for which they themselves never had much time.

Dave Grohl then founded the Foo Fighters and is one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Pat Smear is part of the band. This year they will appear at “Rock am Ring” and “Rock im Park”, among others. In 2022 her drummer Taylor Hawkins died at the age of 50.

Big winners at the 65th Grammy Awards included Beyoncé and Harry Styles.
