FC Bayern is taking a big step towards a direct ticket to the round of 16 in the Champions League. In the 3-1 win against Sporting Lisbon, a manager initially has a mishap.
Relieved, the Bayern professionals jumped around the famous young star Lennart Karl after their great three-goal comeback in front of the fan curve and celebrated their successful end to the year in the Champions League. Spurred on by an unfortunate own goal from Joshua Kimmich, the German soccer champions Sporting Lisbon still lost 3-1 (0-0).
National players Serge Gnabry (65th minute) and Karl (69th) turned the game around with their double strike after the sudden deficit in the 54th minute. Defender Jonathan Tah then increased the score (77′). “We are very, very happy about the victory. It was a very difficult game,” said Gnabry on DAZN.
With 15 points, the German record champions are almost certain of their direct ticket to the round of 16 ahead of the final two matchdays in the league phase in January. Youngster Karl was named “Man of the Match” and was celebrated by the crowd when he was substituted. Karl continues to write Champions League history. At 17 years and 290 days, he is the youngest player to score in three consecutive games in the premier class. This is how he earned the t-online grade 1.
“Being in the Champions League at 17 is something special for me. I’m proud of myself and proud of the team. Everything went right for the goal. I’ve been training my right foot a lot lately,” said Karl: “It was an intense game. We didn’t reward ourselves that much in the first half.”
