Even a goal from former world champion Mario Götze didn’t save PSV Eindhoven from defeat in the top game of the Eredivisie. Coach Roger Schmidt’s team lost 2-1 (0-1) against Ajax Amsterdam and had to cede the lead of the table to the Dutch record champions. The capital city, who greet from the top again for the first time since matchday 15, are now two points ahead of Eindhoven with 48 points.
In the first round, Brian Brobbey, who was loaned out by RB Leipzig, gave the visitors the lead (34th). For the storm talent, this was goal number three in his second appearance for his former club, to which he returned during the winter break. A few minutes later, however, the Dutchman had to be taken off the field due to injury.
In a game in front of empty ranks and with only a few highlights, Götze equalized after the break when he prevailed in the opponent’s penalty area and defeated goalkeeper Remko Pasveer (53rd). Götze shone again as a goalscorer after scoring his first league goal of the season against FC Groningen last week.
The joy didn’t last long, however, as the visitors were victorious in the person of Noussair Mazraoui (74′). The goal was disputed as it was unclear whether the ball had previously crossed the touchline in an action by Daley Blind. The defender was again given preference over the courted Nicolás Tagliafico, who is associated with a move to FC Barcelona, among other things (to the TM rumor mill). Only after a long study of the video images did the goal count, which gives the capital city further hopes of defending the title.
