Google Stadia: Activate Bluetooth on the controller

Google’s games streaming service Stadia is history. But the controller can be converted to continue operation with a small program. That is how it goes.

Google’s Stadia video game streaming service has been shut down since January 18th. But the controller for the service does not belong in the e-waste. It can be used with other devices via a USB cable. And with a software update also wirelessly via Bluetooth.

  1. Charge and connect: Charge the battery to at least 10 percent charge and connect the controller to the computer with a USB cable.
  2. Start update: Now open the Chrome browser, alternatively Microsoft Edge, and the update page call. Select the option “Switch to Bluetooth mode”. Now accept the terms and off you go.
  3. Unlock controllers: Once the computer has recognized the controller, it must be selected and activated using the “Connect” button. Some dexterity is required here. To unlock the controller, first unplug the USB cable and then plug it back in while holding down the three-dot button. Then press the three-point button, assistant button, Y and A at the same time.
  4. Install software: After the download is complete, the new firmware will be loaded. To do this, you have to select the previously recognized controller. It is now called “USB Composite Device”. Once the update is installed, the Stadia controller can be paired wirelessly with many computers, smartphones and tablets via Bluetooth. A list of compatible devices is available at Google support.
  5. This is still important: According to Google, enabling Bluetooth mode cannot be undone. You also have to install the firmware by the end of 2023. Once the update is installed, pressing the Stadia button and Y at the same time will put the controller into pairing mode. And there is also a limitation. In Bluetooth mode, the Stadia controller does not play an audio signal via the jack socket. This is only possible with a USB cable connection.
