(toSkanews) – The Benno white rhinoceros went out at almost 44 years; He was born in the 1980s, in a Tennessee Zoo and, before spending the last 13 years of his life at the Natura Viva Park, landed in Germany between Halle and Leipzig, then in Salzburg. Only in 2012 did he find in Italy a place where he serenely live the last part of his history, which ended by second older rhinos in Europe. Benno died of old age, cared for by all the staff, and his skeleton will soon reach the Museum of Natural Sciences of Turin, explains Camillo Sandri, zoological director of the park.
«Benno often changed home as he manifested aggressive behavior towards the females with whom he lived, with whom he could instead mate to preserve his own species. He did not feel comfortable in a social context and manifested him destroying what he found around him, rubbing his longest horn against any large object in the department. So much to get to shorten it until it reduces it a few centimeters. In just 13 years-Sandri continues-we had put him in a position to let him lengthen 37-38 centimeters. And, even if a horn in a normal situation can overcome the meter and a half in length, we had the testimony that Benno had found his serene environment to live ».
In the meantime, the park on Lake Garda is preparing to welcome two new specimens of white rhinoceros in a new sector specially created.
