Raised in the club’s youth team, modern defender, good at setting up and managing opponents defensively. He has a 60 million clause but…

Simone Mannarino

April 27 – 3.06pm – MILAN

Defending is a difficult art to pass on, especially when modern football’s demands on central defenders have changed direction. Approach, vision of the game, ability to predict the opponent’s schemes, all of this has partly overshadowed defensive skills, which however remain a fundamental prerequisite for those who intend to play that role at the highest levels. Every now and then, however, some rare exceptions pop up, and they often happen in leagues that are not part of the five best in Europe. This is the case of Gonçalo Inácio and Sporting Lisbon, a team capable of putting Arsenal on the ropes in the Champions League and today owner of the strongest central defender among those who have not yet made the step towards the five major championships.

the shield of lions

Gonçalo Inácio was born at the end of August 2001 and at the age of 25 he reached such maturity that he became the first transfer target of all the big European clubs. The attention of clubs like Barcelona and Chelsea arises from the exceptional nature of his characteristics: tall (1.87 metres), left-footed, good both at attacking from deep and building in depth, above all a champion of interceptions and recovered balls. According to SofaScore data, he averages 89% accurate passes, 55% long pass efficiency, 61% aerial duels won and 3.2 recoveries per game. Furthermore, he is also a factor in the opponent’s area: the 23 goals scored (and 15 assists served) certify that Sporting have a truly rare centre-back in their hands.

Having joined the first team in July 2020, Gonçalo Inácio began his adventure on tiptoe with the green and whites then coached by Ruben Amorim. In his first season – 2020-21 – he played 25 games, scored two goals and played for a total of 1,721 minutes. In the following four seasons – that is, until the last one – he progressively increased his importance in the club: minutes, responsibilities and goals grew and he also became a starter in Roberto Martinez’s Portugal. He made his debut with the national team in 2023 against Lichtenstein and then never left the field again. Having taken the starting place with both “his” teams, he won a plethora of national trophies (three championships, two league cups, a Portuguese cup and a super cup) and the 2025 Nations League alongside Ruben Dias and Cristiano Ronaldo, idols from whom he is also learning the art of leadership.

everyone wants it

Precisely this last piece is decisive in being able to talk about him as the best defender still not far from the most important championships. The leadership shown in the Sporting shirt has made him one of the pillars of Portugal’s dressing room ahead of the World Cup, ready to inherit the captain’s armband if needed. Now, less than fifty days before the start of the World Cup, his name is at the top of the wish list of many of the major European clubs: Real Madrid and Barcelona would do anything to get him, and obviously the Premier League giants – Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United – cannot remain indifferent in the face of a release clause of “only” 60 million euros. Sporting is therefore preparing for the next millionaire sale, hoping that the showcase of the World Cup will make the Gonçalo Inácio jewel even more precious.
