The nominations for the Golden Raspberry are out. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are also in the running for the award for the worst performance in Hollywood this year.
From the Oscar to the Golden Raspberry
The two Oscar winners were nominated for the 45th awards ceremony “Joker: Folie à Deux” a. In the widely criticized sequel to the highly acclaimed comic film adaptation “Joker” (2019), Joaquin Phoenix returns as the title character. The Academy honored him as best leading actor in 2020 for his portrayal. Lady Gaga plays his partner Harley Quinn. Although Lady Gaga won her Oscar for singing best film song, she was also nominated for Best Actress (both in 2019 with “A Star Is Born”).
Todd Phillips’ film didn’t fare well beyond the actors either: with seven Golden Raspberry nominations, it is the film most critically viewed by the jury. It is also nominated in the categories of Worst Film, Worst Remake or Cheapest Imitation, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Pairing. Following with six nominations each are the video game adaptation “Borderlands,” the “Spider-Man” expansion “Madame Web,” and Francis Ford Coppola “Megapolis” and the biopic “Reagan” right behind it.
Big names at the shameful prize
The ensembles of these films can also be found in the nominations for the worst actors. So Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are in prominent company. In addition to them, Dennis Quaid (“Reagan”), Cate Blanchett (“Borderlands”) and Dakota Johnson (“Madame Web”) are nominated. Jack Black is even nominated twice: as Worst Actor for “Dear Santa” and as Worst Supporting Actor in “Borderlands”. He is also named the worst pairing in the category – but the jury is keeping it open in the category, as they found all the combinations in “Borderlands” to be bad. This is only topped by Jon Voight, who received four nominations for Worst Supporting Actor (for “Megalopolis”, “Reagan”, “Shadow Land” and “Strangers”).
The mocking Golden Raspberry traditionally announces its nominations the day before the Oscars. It will soon be known how the films mentioned will be received at the biggest film prize.
