Golden Calf for the first time to animation film, first for ‘Bredase’ Knor

Knor van Jasper Kuipers from Breda has won the Golden Calf for Best Film. Never before has an animation film won this renowned national award. The prize was awarded on Friday evening during the Netherlands Film Festival in Utrecht.

Earlier in the evening, Knor was awarded the statuettes for Best Production Design and Best Direction. The film was also a ‘calf’ candidate in two other categories. It was the first time that an animation film had been nominated for this prestigious Dutch film prize.

Everything with real materials
It was also announced this week that Knor is the Dutch entry for the Oscars in the best animated feature film category. It is the first time that a Dutch so-called stop-motion film has been submitted for an Oscar. Stop-motion is an animation technique that is as old as film itself, but has now been almost supplanted by computer animation. Director Mascha Halberstad and Jasper Kuipers found each other in their love for pure handicraft. Everything in the film is made with real materials.

Knor premiered in July and received rave reviews in the Dutch press. The film has been seen in theaters more than 50,000 times. It is also far from certain whether Knor will also end up on the final short list of Oscar nominees. It will be announced on December 21 whether it is part of a shorter list from which nominees will be chosen. The final nominations will be announced January 24.

‘The Revenge of Knor’
Jasper Kuipers worked for three years on Knor, a film that has already been sold to fifteen countries before the Dutch premiere. It was made after the book ‘The revenge of Knor’ by Tosca Menten. It is about a girl who gets a pig from her grandfather. But that grandfather is also a butcher and he has other intentions with the pig.
