FC St. Pauli is going into the future with its regular goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. As the second division league leaders announced on Wednesday, the keeper’s expiring contract has been extended beyond 2024. Vasilj moved to FCSP from Zorya Lugansk from Ukraine on a free transfer in 2021, and the Bosnian has kept his box clean 25 times in 80 appearances so far.
Sports director Andreas Bornemann said about the personnel: “Niko has proven his value for our team from the start and is an important factor in our now very solid defense. He once again underlined how important he is for us with his strong performance in the start of the second half of the season against Kaiserslautern. That’s why we’re happy that Niko sees his future with us.”
Head coach Fabian Hürzeler, whose future at FCSP is still completely open, added: “Our style of play is also very challenging for our goalkeepers. Niko took to this brilliantly and improved in all aspects of modern goalkeeping during his time with us. He’s a lot of fun to work with and I don’t think he’s at the end of his development yet.”

Vasilj explained: “I had the feeling that my journey at FC St. Pauli wasn’t over yet. The team has developed extremely well and I would like to continue to be a building block in the future to help steer the team in the right direction. I would like to thank those responsible at the club, the coaching team and all the fans for their incredible support and trust in me over the past 30 months. It’s a great feeling to be part of this club. I feel like I’m in the right place both in terms of sport and in my private life, together with my wife.”
