Goalkeeper coach in the long run? Tom Starke makes you sit up and take notice

Former Bundesliga goalkeeper Tom Starke will initially close the gap at FC Bayern that was created by the separation from goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic. Does the 41-year-old even keep the post? Starke now made people sit up and take notice with a statement.

After the surprising sacking of goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic last Monday, Tom Starke initially took over the task on an interim basis, as the record champions announced the following day.

Starke, who once worked for Bayer Leverkusen, MSV Duisburg, TSG Hoffenheim and last but not least FC Bayern during his active career, has been employed at the club since 2017 as goalkeeping coordinator in the youth academy and goalkeeping coach for the U19s. Now he is rising, at least temporarily, to the first team.

According to his own statement, he does not yet know how long Starke will take on the new task. “I’ll be on the bench as a goalkeeper coach for the next few games, we’ll see what happens after that,” he revealed to “Sport1”.

The Bundesliga professional, who has played 101 times, explained: “Up until now, my focus has been on the campus, but if the first team needs me, then of course that’s a different story.”

Permanently as goalkeeping coach of FC Bayern? Starke makes you sit up and take notice

However, Tom Starke also hinted that permanent employment as a goalkeeping coach for the Munich pros would certainly be attractive. “In any case, I’m not ruling out staying with the first team as goalkeeping coach,” he said.

Most recently, the Munich “Abendzeitung” reported that Starke at Bayern could only be an interim solution. The newspaper named Jaroslav Drobny, once goalkeeper at VfL Bochum, Werder Bremen, Hertha BSC or Hamburger SV, among others, as a permanent alternative.

Like Starke, the Czech would also be an internal solution, as he also moved to Munich after the end of his career. Since November 2021 he has been the goalkeeper coach for FC Bayern’s third division team.
