^Aachen, Jan. 13, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Current data from Geotab, a
leading providers of connected transport solutions, show that modern
Vehicle batteries deliver strong performance throughout their entire service life
– also taking into account more frequent fast charging processes.
In its updated study on the state of EV batteries, the
Company provides real-world battery health data from more than 22,700
Electric vehicles from 21 brands and models and relies on several
Years of aggregated telematics data. The updated analysis shows one
average annual battery degradation rate of 2.3 percent
with 1.8 percent in 2024.
This slight increase reflects the changing use of electric vehicles
reflected, in particular the increasing dependence on high-performance
DC fast chargers. The lifespan of electric vehicles can
pose a problem for both private users and fleet operators.
But by understanding how batteries perform under different charging, climate and

charged and used more intensively,” says Charlotte Argue, Senior Manager,
Sustainable Mobility at Geotab.?Our latest data shows that the

Hold out replacement cycles. What has changed is that
Charging behavior now plays a much larger role in how fast the
Batteries age, giving operators the opportunity to face long-term risks
through intelligent charging strategies.”
Charging performance is becoming the dominant factor
The analysis shows that the charging power now has the greatest influence
the condition and wear of batteries. Vehicles that are on a large scale
DC fast charging over 100 kW showed one
faster degradation of up to 3.0 percent per year on average,
compared to about 1.5 percent for vehicles that primarily use
Alternating current or lower power.
Other factors, such as climate, had a lower
independent influence. Vehicles that were operated in hotter regions
showed degradation about 0.4 percent faster per year than vehicles
in temperate climates.
Saying goodbye to strict charging rules?
The data also highlights the need for strict daily charging limits
in question. Vehicles that regularly use a larger charge state range
did not show significantly higher degradation unless the battery is
regularly completely charged or almost completely discharged.
Vehicles that are used more frequently show a slightly faster degradation
Compared to the group with the lowest usage by around 0.8 percent per year
is higher. However, this is an acceptable compromise in relation to the
operational and financial benefits that arise from the continued operation of the
Vehicles result. For many fleets, these lead to productivity increases
directly at a lower cost per kilometer over the life of the vehicle
vehicle.
“For fleets, the focus should be on balance,” adds Argue
added.?The use of the lowest charging power that is still operational

What is battery degradation?
The degradation (decrease in capacity) of batteries is a natural process,
which is the amount of energy a battery can store over time,
reduced.
The condition of the battery is measured as State of Health (SOH). Batteries
begin their lifespan with an SOH of 100 percent and deteriorate
gradually. For example, a 60 kWh battery with a SOH
is operated at 80 percent, effectively like a 48 kWh battery.
Geotab’s data shows that although degradation rates vary depending on the model,
Charging behavior and usage patterns vary, most modern EV batteries
however, far beyond the typical usage and fleet replacement periods for
remain suitable for their purpose.
