First Danny Röhl canceled, but now he will be the new coach at Glasgow Rangers. The Scots confirmed previous media reports on Monday afternoon. The 36-year-old signed a contract until the summer of 2028. Last Wednesday, Röhl is said to have initially canceled because he did not have the time to adequately prepare for the next competitive game. However, the Rangers campaigned vehemently for him, which now led to a turnaround.
“It is a great privilege to take on the role of head coach at such an incredible club,” said Röhl. “The expectations here are clear. The fans want to see results now – my mentality and experience tell me that I feel the same way and I believe in the players that we can do it. We have no time to waste, we’ll get started straight away. I know that trust has to be earned and I understand that we have to show the fans from the start on the pitch that they can have trust in what we are doing. The expectations are huge and I love this challenge because I also have it in myself and place high demands on the team. Rangers is built on a tradition of hard work, togetherness and success – that’s exactly what you’ll get from me and that’s exactly what I want my team to represent for everyone.”
A transfer fee is not due for Röhl, as it is said. The trainer and Sheffield Wednesday parted ways amicably at the end of July, despite a contract that runs until 2027. Röhl moved to the Owls in October 2023 after leaving Hansi Flick’s assistant coach with the German national team.
Before Röhl’s commitment: Difficult search for a coach at Glasgow Rangers
The Rangers suffered some setbacks in their search for a successor to the released Russell Martin. Both Steven Gerrard, who was without a club, and Kevin Muscat (Shanghai Port) were not available to play – the same initially applied to Röhl. The man from Zwickau was invited to an interview at the beginning of October and is said to have impressed those responsible at the club. According to reports, Röhl was already an issue before Martin was appointed in the summer. The 39-year-old had to leave after a weak start to the season with just five wins from 17 games.
Actually, the negotiations between the Rangers and Muscat were said to have been well advanced until it surprisingly became clear that implementation could not be implemented. The 52-year-old wants to lead SH Port to the championship in China and therefore does not want to give up his position.
Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell have recently been harshly criticized by their own supporters. “Stewart, Thelwell, pack your bags and leave before we pack them for you,” a fan banner recently said. “We know the results this season have fallen short of our expectations, but with Danny and his team we are confident we can get this season back on track,” said Stewart. Steven Smith looked after the team on an interim basis in the 2-2 draw against Dundee United.
