Gladbach wants to “definitely” extend the summer

Borussia Mönchengladbach wants to “definitely” extend the contract with goalkeeper Yann Sommer, which expires at the end of June 2023.

“Yann knows that we absolutely want to keep him, I already told him that in a personal conversation. He is an incredibly important factor in our team at the moment and would also be so for the future. Especially in a situation in which a certain upheaval is pending for the club, Yann plays an immensely important role,” said sports director Roland Virkus to the “kicker”.

“It was agreed that we would meet again after the international break. I think after the Fürth game there will be an opportunity to intensify talks,” added Virkus. A free transfer of the number 1 at the end of the contract should be avoided at all costs.

The Swiss national goalkeeper is currently in impressive form, which he recently underlined again with numerous brilliant saves in the 1-1 draw against FSV Mainz 05.

The prerequisite is that Borussia remain in the class. Gladbach can’t tempt summer with Europe next season, “but I can show Yann other perspectives,” said Virkus: “Because we definitely don’t want to play against relegation every year, we want to build something up again. And that’s where he would be in ours plans play a very important role.”
