Gladbach: Virkus hopes that Plea & Hofmann will have a domino effect on contracts

8 more contracts end in 2023

With Alassane Plea (29) and Jonas Hofmann (30), Borussia Mönchengladbach recently extended the contracts of two top performers, which previously expired in 2023. The wave of departures that is threatening next summer – there are still eight more working papers at the end of the season – has not yet been fully absorbed, but sporting director Roland Virkus is hoping for a domino effect.

“We’re pleased that the boys want to go down the path that we showed them in the talks. That can of course help us with the personal details that are still open, no question about it,” said the 55-year-old (quoted via “Foosball‘) at a press conference on Tuesday.

With market values of 15 million and 13 million euros respectively, Plea and Hofmann are among the most valuable professionals in the Gladbach squad and are set under coach Daniel Farke. Last season, both were top scorers in the “foals” with 18 goals each. The fact that the two most important offensive forces will continue to wear the Borussia jersey after the disappointing tenth place last year increases the hope in the environment that the impending upheaval will not be as drastic as initially assumed.

Gladbach sports director Virkus on Thuram & Co.: “We are in good talks”

“I’m not a clairvoyant as to when the next decisions will be made,” said Virkus, now with a view to Marcus Thuram (23), Yann Sommer (32), Ramy Bensebaini (26) and Co.: “We are in good talks. We know what the players want – and the players know what we want. And if there’s something to announce, we’ll do it. Let’s see.”

In addition, Virkus, who has been Max Eberl’s successor since February 2022, announced that he would keep his eyes open for possible newcomers, for example as a replacement for Breel Embolo (25), who had moved to AS Monaco: “Of course we’re looking and observing the market. But you shouldn’t get impatient now, because you don’t make good decisions when you’re in a rush. We want to find good solutions, taking into account our possibilities.”
