Gladbach “the biggest puzzle in the league”, BVB and RB Leipzig “far below their potential”

Former Bundesliga coach Eduard Geyer was disappointed with the performance of the ambitious clubs Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Both the table runner-up BVB and the three other alleged top clubs remained “far below their potential” in the current season in the German House of Lords, said Geyer in a “kicker” column. “They can all play wonderful football, but on days when there is resistance they wrestle their opponents too seldom and with too little determination. The whining about the superiority of FC Bayern doesn’t help anyone.”

In particular, Borussia vom Niederrhein got off badly in Geyer’s rating. “Before the season started, I thought Gladbach would be able to attack at the top. This team is the biggest puzzle in the league for me. They sweep Bayern 5-0 off the pitch in the cup and are 6-0 down against Freiburg after 37 minutes”, said the 77-year-old last GDR selection coach.

“The people of Gladbach shouldn’t underestimate their situation,” advised Geyer, even if it was “right” that sports director Max Eberl stuck to coach Adi Hütter.

RB Leipzig according to Ede Geyer “too good”

In the opinion of the iconic coach, RB Leipzig must also be vigilant. The crashed runner-up had “lost a lot of quality in the past year and a half with Timo Werner, Dayot Upamecano, Marcel Sabitzer and coach Julian Nagelsmann,” wrote Geyer.

The experienced football teacher criticized: “This team is too good for me, even after the change of coach. Sabitzer was someone who was uncomfortable – even with his teammates. You need someone like that. He’s missing now.”

Basically, Geyer is dissatisfied with the quality of football in Germany’s top division. “From a sporting point of view, the league is on the spot. There were a number of games in the first half of the season that I would have liked to switch off – and too many pushes and back passes,” said Geyer. “Maybe you have to go to the rules. I would be in favor of not being able to pass the ball back into your own half when you are in possession of the opposing half.”
