Gladbach: Matthias Ginter before a sensational return

There has been speculation about Matthias Ginter’s future for months after he made it public that he would not renew his contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach. The central defender may make a sensational return to one of his former clubs.

According to “picture” and “Sport Bild” switch back to SC Freiburg. The deal should be announced shortly, it is said.

The footballing career of the German international began at SC Freiburg. At the age of eleven, the native of Freiburg went to the youth academy of the Breisgau club and went through all the junior teams there from then on. In the U19s he was coached by the current head coach Christian Streich, and together they celebrated winning the Junior Cup in 2010/11.

A season later, Ginter made his debut in the Bundesliga for the first time. Before moving to Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2014, he had worked for a regular place at SC Freiburg. After three years at BVB, the central defender moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Matthias Ginter would probably be the direct replacement for DFB colleague Nico Schlotterbeck at SC Freiburg, who will move to Borussia Dortmund in the summer. BVB officially announced this transfer on Monday. Since Ginter’s contract in Gladbach expires at the end of June, Freiburg would not have to pay a fee.

Ginter’s future has been the subject of wild speculation for the past few weeks. The 28-year-old was initially traded at FC Bayern, where Niklas Süle’s squad position will become vacant. He is also said to have aroused interest at Inter Milan. Recently it was said that Premier League club Aston Villa could strike in the summer.

The defender himself recently confirmed that a decision is imminent. “It won’t be long before I say something about it,” Ginter told “Bild”.
