Gladbach icon reveals “misunderstandings” with Max Eberl

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s board member Hans Meyer has commented on the unpleasant circumstances surrounding Max Eberl’s resignation and his move to RB Leipzig.

“The nature of the separation and the misunderstandings did not fit this successful collaboration. His name remains inseparably linked to the admirable development of our Borussia over the past decade,” said Meyer in a “kicker” interview.

The 79-year-old, who worked as head coach and scout in Gladbach between 1999 and 2003 and in the 2008/2009 season, added: “I was very happy that Max said things were going on for him. Behind his performance stood hard work, but he also had good conditions in and for his team. This club and Max Eberl were a very good, efficient and willing unit for an unusually long time.”

He personally had a “trusting, professional relationship” with the former sports director, according to Meyer.

Max Eberl raises allegations against Gladbach bosses

Eberl resigned from his post in Gladbach at the end of January due to acute exhaustion.

Most recently, the 49-year-old ex-professional, who joined RB Leipzig as the new sports director on December 15, had harshly criticized his former club. He was disappointed that Borussia had not clearly rejected the “lying” allegations from the fan scene against him, Eberl told the “Welt am Sonntag”.

Those responsible in Gladbach would have known “how I felt and how often I cried in conversations and said that I couldn’t do it anymore. That’s why I was very disappointed that people with whom I worked almost every day for 23 years told me don’t believe it. I can’t understand that,” said Eberl.

Gladbach’s managing director Markus Aretz then asked the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” for “calm” in the matter and explained that there should now be no “back and forth of mutual accusations”.
