Ex-professional Eugen Polanski has the realistic opportunity at Borussia Mönchengladbach to become the permanent chief coach of his home club from the interim solution. The successor of the leaf of the leaves Gerardo Seoane is said to sit on the Bundesliga club’s coaching bank for longer than only on Sunday in the game at Bayer Leverkusen. “Of course, something can develop from this,” said sports director Roland Virkus on Tuesday.
“We clearly said Eugen that this is now his chance. We didn’t talk about a time,” Virkus said. “It will certainly not be the Leverkusen game alone. I can certainly say that.” Virkus also announced that it “probing the market”. Nevertheless, the former Polish international, who, in addition to Borussia, also fulfills “some” of the desired profile properties for Borussia Getafe in Spain, FSV Mainz 05 and 1899 Hoffenheim.
Polanski recently trained the Borussia regional league team since summer 2022. Virkus is considered a sponsor of the 39-year-old, whom he had described in the past as a great coaching talent. “Eugen is a boy with energy that has been waiting for this opportunity and which he also deserves. He learned under Tuchel, Nagelsmann and also under Rose,” said Virkus, who relies on a “perhaps different speech”: “I am very convinced that this team has a quality and it is important to wake it up.”
Nevertheless, this team, who lost top performers such as Ko ItaKura, Julian Weigl and Alassane Plea in the summer, is still goalless after three match days and with just one point in the table cellar. Although the negative trend started in the final phase of last season and the team had played the realistic chance of a reception of European Cup, the club held on Seoane in the summer.
Virkus evoked questions about his own misjudgment on this point. “If you have to release a trainer, that’s always a defeat. A defeat for the whole club,” said the 58-year-old, who is criticized himself. “I think I don’t have to explain to anyone what the club means for me. And I do everything I do for this club and I will continue to do so,” said Mönchengladbach native and former head of the youth performance center.
