Gladbach coach traded to second division team: search for Schweinsteiger’s successor

Second division soccer team VfL Osnabrück separated from its coach Tobias Schweinsteiger a few days after the bankruptcy at Eintracht Braunschweig. The search for a successor is now in full swing, and the focus is reportedly on Gladbach.

Eugen Polánski is one of the small circle of preferred candidates at the bottom of the second division, VfL Osnabrück, reports “Sky”.

The former professional has been working as the coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach’s second team since the summer of 2022, with whom he competes in the Regionalliga West. According to the broadcaster, it is still unclear how good the chances are at Bremer Brücke of convincing the 37-year-old to join the struggling second division team.

A final decision from Polánski is still pending, and a cancellation is also possible.

The 19-time Polish international and 254-time Bundesliga professional started his career at Borussia Mönchengladbach. After a short interlude in Spain with Getafe CF, he also played for Mainz 05 and TSG Hoffenheim. After his career ended, he gained his first experiences on the sidelines as an assistant coach at the Swiss club FC St. Gallen.

Osnabrück pulls the ripcord on promotion coach Schweinsteiger

In the summer of 2019, Polánski returned to Gladbach, where he initially took over the position of talent coach from Otto Addo, who had moved to BVB. Two years later he was appointed head coach of the Foals’ second team.

At VfL Osnabrück, the previous assistant coaches Martin Heck and Tim Danneberg have taken over on an interim basis. “After a thorough analysis of the development, the latest results and numerous internal discussions, the joint decision was made to give the team new impetus in the position of head coach,” the club said in a statement.

Tobias Schweinsteiger took over the team in the 3rd league at the end of August 2022 and achieved promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in his first season. There, VfL only managed one win in 13 games.
