The Dane Jonas Vingegaard triumphs at the Giro d’Italia and rises into a select circle. His success promises excitement with a view to the Tour de France.

With overall victory at the Giro d’Italia, Jonas Vingegaard became the eighth professional in history to win all three major tours. The 29-year-old Dane prevailed in the final score with a lead of more than five minutes.

This group includes Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Alberto Contador, Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Froome. Vingegaard won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023. Last year he won the overall victory at the Vuelta.

“I actually wanted to get the pink jersey and win a stage. Now it’s pink plus five stages. That went better than I could have imagined,” said Vingegaard in the pink leading jersey at the finish.

Vingegaard doesn’t want to think about the Tour de France

After the final 21st stage in Rome, he was 5:22 minutes ahead of the Austrian Felix Gall and 6:25 minutes ahead of the Australian Jai Hindley from the German Red Bull team. The Italian Jonathan Milan won the day in the sprint.

His long-term rival Tadej Pogačar did not start at this year’s Giro. The two will meet again at the Tour de France. The race begins on July 4th with the Grand Départ in Barcelona. Florian Lipowitz, who came third on the German tour last year, will also start there.

But the man in pink didn’t want to concern himself with thoughts about France on Sunday: “We’ll first enjoy our holiday in Rome.”
