Jonas Vingegaard impressively secured victory at the first mountain finish of the 109th Giro d’Italia. Now the top favorite rides in the pink jersey of the overall leader.
The previous leader Afonso Eulálio As expected, from Portugal was no longer able to follow on the final climb to the Pila ski area in the Aosta Valley in the north of the country.
Big lead over Eulálio
Vingegaard, the biggest favorite for the Giro triumph, is now at the top of the overall ranking with a gap of 2:26 minutes to Eulálio about a week before the end of the tour.
The Dane has won twice in the past Tour de France and last year the Spanish Vuelta. With a victory in the Giro, he would have triumphed in all three major cycling tours.
Third stage win for Vingegaard
The 29-year-old overtook the outliers five kilometers before the finish of the 14th stage and took the day’s victory with a gap of 49 seconds to the Austrian Felix Gall and 58 seconds to the Australian Jai Hindley after 133 kilometers with a total of three climbs in the first category.
For Vingegaard it was his third stage victory in this year’s Tour of Italy. On Sunday there will be a mass sprint in Milan after a flat stage with a distance of 157 kilometers. The next rest day follows on Monday before the tour ends in Rome on May 31st.
